What, then, is an idiomatic expression? We can say that an idiomatic expression is some number of phrases which, taken together, mean something unique from the individual expressions of the idiom when they stand alone. The way in which the words are combined is often funny, illogical or in some cases grammatically wrong. These are the individual properties of some idiomatic expressions. Other idiomatic expression are absolutely ordinary and logical in their grammar and vocabulary. Due to the special features of some idiomatic expressions, we shall learn the idiomatic expressions as a whole and we often cannot change any part of it (except maybe, only the tense of the verb).
English language is very rich in idiomatic expressions. Actually, it is difficult to speak or write English language without using idioms. An English native speaker is very often not aware that he is using an idiom; maybe he does not even realize that an idiom which he applies is grammatically incorrect. A non-native learner makes the correct use of idiomatic English one of his main goals, and the fact that some idioms are illogical or grammatically wrong causes him difficulty. Only careful study and exact learning will help.
It is impossible to be explained why a particular idiom has developed an unusual arrangement or choice of phrases. The idiom has been fixed by long usage as is often understood from the vocabulary.
