How Bright Is Your Light?

How Bright Is Your Light?

Jesus said, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matt. 5:16) His followers must always keep their light burning and should never allow anything to hide it.

This does not mean that we should go around calling attention to the good works we do, but when we are engaged in them from day to day, those around us will naturally see them. We must not seek to always be in the spotlight, proudly parading or boasting about the things we do. However, on the other hand, good works should not be hidden either. People are influenced for good when they see good, just as they often are influenced for bad when they see bad. We are in this world to do good and encourage others to do the same. What better way can we do this than to leave a good example for others to follow?

How We Let Our Light Shine

Faithfully attending Bible classes and worship is a good beginning. How can we influence others to go if we don’t, or if we feel free to miss because of any excuse that comes along?

Other ways include:

  • Being involved in the day-to-day work of the church
  • Visiting or calling the negligent
  • Sending a card that encourages and uplifts someone
  • Commending someone for a good job well done
  • Taking a sick or disabled person a hot meal
  • Mowing a widow’s grass or cleaning the gutters
  • Visiting new members and having them in your home
  • Being on time for Bible study and worship
  • Giving a friend a tract or helpful literature
  • Teaching someone the gospel
  • Providing transportation for those who need it
  • Visiting the bereaved, shut-ins, and lonely
  • Being friendly and greeting visitors
  • Promoting hospitality among the members
  • Praying for specific people and their needs

The list is endless when we put our minds and bodies to work for the Lord.

How We Hide Our Light

  • When we show little or no interest in the above activities
  • When we are not dependable
  • When we have to be pulled, prodded, and pampered
  • When we become easily upset, angry, or discouraged when things don’t go our way
  • When we manifest a negative, critical attitude
  • When we show little interest in improving and growing
  • When we are uncooperative
  • When we offer excuses
  • When we do not take a firm stand for the truth
  • When we fail to speak the truth in love
  • When our support in money and time is minimal

Again, the list can be endless.

The Result of Both

Good works strengthen our faith in God and our love for one another. Without them, our faith is dead (James 2:17), and love is shallow and hypocritical (Rom. 12:9). Faith working through love is what really avails in the sight of God (Gal. 5:6).

When those around us—family, friends, neighbors—see our light, many will be led to glorify the Father themselves. Most every Christian has been influenced by the good works of someone in their life, and when taught the gospel, sooner or later responded in obedience. Likewise, many have been led astray and weakened by the lukewarm, careless examples of uncommitted members.
