We sing the song, “I Want To Be A Worker For The Lord”. We read the scriptures, “…being fruitful in every good work…” (Col.1:10) and “…always abounding in the work of the Lord…” (I Cor. 15:58). But are you working for the Lord? It would be good for each of us to consider what we are doing for the church, other than our attendance, considering first whether we are faithful in doing that. Below is a list of things that most every Christian can do. Try this. As you read through the list, circle the numbers of those things you are presently doing. Also, underline what you can start doing immediately. When you get busy doing positive things to help others and to help build up the church your life will become far more rewarding. Try it!
(1) Start a card ministry. Send a personal card to the sick, shutin, bereaved, someone who has suffered some hardship, or just needs encouragement. (2) Visit or do something personally for one of the above. (3) Use your telephone to encourage those who need it, and include absentees and those who are spiritually weak. (4) Commend someone who is growing, or doing a good job, for being a good example. (5) Reach out to new members by always speaking to them; have them in your home to get better acquainted. (6) Take food, or do a good deed, to someone who may need it. (7) Offer to assist someone who has been assigned to some duty related to the church and its work. (8) Make suggestions for improving anything that pertains to the work or worship services. (9) Participate in more church activities. (10) Come earlier, stay later, and enjoy the fellowship of other Christians. (11) Be sure to speak to visitors and encourage them to come back. (12) Pray more for the church, the leaders, and for individuals with specific needs, and tell them you are praying for them. (13) Read and study your Bible every day. (14) Become interested and supportive of any class or program that will enhance your spiritual life. (15) Organize a Bible study with a lost friend, and ask someone to teach it if you feel inadequate. (16) Let it be known that you and your car are available if anyone needs transportation. (17) Attend area gospel meetings, or other special events, to be spiritually uplifted and to encourage the churches in their work. (17) Increase your financial contribution to the Lord’s work if you are not giving as you should. (18) If you see something that “somebody” needs to do, and you can do it….do it! (19) Look for the good in the church and in people, and let love cover a multitude of sins. (20) Resolve to help wherever you can, be dependable, go the second mile when needed, and be thankful that you have the health to do so. Some don’t.
