Priorities In Following Jesus

Priorities In Following Jesus

Jesus taught the importance of putting things first. A few examples can be read in Matthew 5:24; 7:5; 8:21; 23:26. As His disciples, we are told, “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” (Matt. 6:33) God demands first place in our lives, not when we find the time to work Him into our busy schedule. Everyone finds the time to do what is considered important, and it’s done on time. Whether it be getting to our jobs, or to school, or to the doctor, or to any important appointment, we set priorities for ourselves all the time, and we observe them, because they are important.

Why are some people faithful and dependable in such day-to-day activities, but when it comes to spiritual obligations, such is not considered important? Many in the church take Christianity as an optional “take it or leave it” religion. They never think of the Lord demanding first place in their lives. That’s why some assemble with the church if it’s convenient, pray if they feel like it, study the Bible if there is nothing else to do at the time, and participate in church-related functions if they want to. Supporting the church is not a priority to them. Some seldom come to a Bible class, if ever; they will attend a Gospel Meeting maybe, or Sunday morning if it’s convenient. They show little or no interest in anything related to the church, except showing up for the occasional Sunday morning. What is amazing is that these people really think they will go to heaven in spite of such lack of interest. How sad! How deceived! Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. (Gal. 6:7-8)

Even among the more “faithful,” some can do better in “seeking first the kingdom.” Bible teachers should make adequate preparation, be in the classroom and ready to teach at least ten minutes early, and greet the students as they come in, rather than have them waiting on their teacher. Anytime you cannot teach, get someone to substitute for you. Be responsible and dependable. Worship leaders should consider their assigned duties seriously, make adequate preparation, be early in arriving and ready to assume your assigned duties. Take it seriously. If you cannot come, call the worship coordinator so that you can be replaced before the last minute.

Everyone should feel obligated to assemble with the church faithfully and give financial support faithfully. Can the church get along without your money? Yes, but giving is a personal obligation, and we give because we love the Lord and want to support His cause. This must be a priority. When you are away one Sunday you don’t use the Lord’s money for something else. This would be robbing God of that which rightfully belongs to Him. (Malachi 3:3-10) Serving the Lord must take the priority position in our lives. We are either serving Him, or we are serving self. Which is it for you?
