There are various proofs of the inspiration of the Bible. Another one in this particular series of articles would be the agreement of modern-day science and astronomy with the biblical record. Of course, the Bible is not a science book, nor does it deal with scientific facts; however, it is scientifically accurate. Modern science has never disproved any statement in the Bible, yet it has proved the truthfulness of many biblical statements which science discovered thousands of years later. Some of these are given below.
Scientific Principles Are Stated.
The knowledge of anything in existence was first announced by Herbert Spencer in the 19th century A.D. He realized the five manifestations of it are: time, force, activity, space, and matter. The first chapter of Genesis records how everything came into existence. The very first verse states these five elements:
-
Time — “In the beginning”
-
Force — “God”
-
Activity — “created”
-
Space — “the heavens”
-
Matter — “and the earth”
It took almost 3,500 years to discover what Moses wrote by inspiration in the first verse of the Bible.
The Rotundity of the Earth.
Columbus proved that the earth was round in 1492 A.D. Until that time it was universally believed to be flat. Then Magellan sailed around the earth proving that it was spherical in shape. In no scripture is it stated or implied that the earth is flat. However, more than 700 years B.C., an inspired prophet described God as “He who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers…” (Isaiah 40:22).
The Earth Is Suspended on Nothing.
Through the centuries men had different theories concerning how the earth was held in place—such as it floating on water, or Atlas, the Greek god, holding it on his shoulders. When they sailed around the earth, Magellan and others discovered that it touches nothing visible to hold it in place. Yet, thousands of years earlier, Job wrote by inspiration: “He stretches out the north over empty space; He hangs the earth on nothing.” (Job 26:7)
Astronomers have discovered that the far North has no planets or shining stars. It is just an empty space. Yet, there are millions visible to the South, East, and West. Now, what did Job write? Read it again!
The Stars Are Innumerable.
In the second century A.D., Ptolemy estimated there to be not more than 3,000 stars. Other students of the stars believed even this number to be exaggerated. However, when the telescope was invented in the Middle Ages, it was discovered that the stars are countless.
Jeremiah 33:22 says that the stars cannot be numbered, nor the sand of the sea. God also pointed this out to Abraham in Genesis 15:5.
The Paths of the Sea.
Matthew Maury, an explorer and founder of the science of oceanography, was a firm believer in the Bible. When he read Psalm 8:8, which speaks of the “paths of the sea,” he determined to find them. Within a few years he had charted the principal lanes of the sea, and these are followed by oceangoing vessels to this day. How did David know about them? He had to have written by divine inspiration.
