The New Life

Only a Christian can experience two lives – the old and the new. Jesus told Nicodemus that to enter the kingdom of God one “must be born again.” He then explained that the new birth comes about by “water and the Spirit.” (John 3:3-5) The new birth is followed by a new life. According to the Spirit’s directions, through the Word, one is buried with Christ by baptism and raised with Christ “to walk in newness of life.” (Rom.6:4) This new birth is “into Christ” (Rom.6:3), and “if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.” (II Cor.5:17) The new life in Christ brings new blessings. In fact, all spiritual bless-ings are “in Christ.” (Eph.1:3)

In Christ we have new gifts. Eternal life is God’s gift to the penitent sinner through Jesus Christ. (Rom.6:23) This gift is “indescribable.” (II Cor.9:15). No words of man can adequately de-scribe it. God’s gifts to man are “good and perfect.” (James 1:17) Think of the gift of His Son, the gift of His Word, the gift of His church, the gift of redemption, the gift of a name that is above every name. Every gift is good and perfect.

In Christ we have new goals. Challenging goals are important for a fully productive life, physically and materially, But in Christ we have new goals, such as living the new life (Col.3:1-4); growing in grace and knowledge (II Pet.3:18); leading others to Christ (II Tim.2:2), and going to heaven. (Rev.14:13)

In Christ we have new garments. Garments are worn for protection, as well as for adorn-ment. The Christian must wear clothing that will protect him when being tempted, persecuted and discouraged. (Eph.6:10-17) As Christians, we want to look our best, being neat and clean in body and clothing, but spiritual attraction is also important. Putting on Christ and being a good example will attract others to Him. (Gal.3:27; Matt.5:16)

In Christ we have new gladness. Man often seeks happiness in money, power, prominence and pleasure, but in Christ we can “rejoice with joy that is inexpressible.” (I Pet.1:8) Even in times of hard-ship and persecution, we can rejoice and be exceedingly glad because of our hope of heaven. (Matt.5:12)

In Christ we have new glory. Recognition and honor often come in this life for special accomplish-ments. Likewise, the Christian usually is recognized with respect and admiration for his commitment and devotion. There is no greater honor than to be a child of God and serve the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

But the glory we have here is just a foretaste of that which we will have in heaven.

(Rom.8:18; Col.3:4) Are you living the “new life”?
