The key word of Proverbs is wisdom. The book was written by Solomon, whom God blessed with great wisdom when he became the king of Israel. Because he had asked God for an understanding heart to judge the people and be able to discern between good and evil, rather than riches or a long life, the Lord gave him far more than he had requested. Not only was he given a wise and understanding heart that far exceeded the wisdom of any who came before or after him, he also was blessed with great riches. (1 Kings 3:5-13) The various messages of Proverbs exemplify the supernatural wisdom Solomon possessed. We call your attention to some of them.
The Wise Increase Learning By Listening – “A wise man will hear and increase learning…” (Prov. 3:5) The importance of hearing (listening) is emphasized repeatedly in scripture. Learning ceases when we do all the talking.
The Wise Appreciate Being Rebuked – “…Rebuke a wise man, and he will love you.” (Prov. 9:8-9) Wise people realize they make mistakes in judgment and desire to improve. Overcoming shortcomings leads one to even greater wisdom. “…He who heeds counsel is wise.” (Prov. 12:15)
The Wise Follow Commands – “The wise in heart will receive commands…” (Prov. 10:8) He realizes that everyone must answer to someone. He learns to submit to those in authority and avoids the consequences of insubordination. “A wise son heeds his father’s instructions.” (Prov. 13:1)
The Wise Continue Growing In Knowledge – “Wise people store up knowledge…” (Prov. 10:14) Successful people in any field learn all they can about their profession. They stay alert to new and better tools and methods.
The Wise Are Soul Winners – “…and he that wins souls is wise.” (Prov. 11:30) Since the soul is man’s most valuable possession, wisdom is seen when we bring salvation to the lost. Also, the wise make sure of their own salvation.
The Wise Are A Source Of Wisdom – “He who walks with wise men will be wise…” (Prov. 13:20) One can keep company with wise people, or the ignorant. Either one has the power to influence those around them.
The Wise Shun Evil Things – “A wise man fears and departs from evil…” (Prov. 14:16) The longer we linger in the face of temptation, the more difficult it is to resist. We must recognize evil for what it is, fear it, and depart from it.
