Happy Mother’s Day!

Once again, America and many other countries around the world are celebrating one of the most important holidays of the year in honor of one of the most important people in the world. We live because our mother brought us into this world. Of all the people to be honored, those who have undertaken the role of motherhood, and have done so with love, devotion, sacrifice, and loyalty, are worthy of all the recognition that could be bestowed upon them. How fitting and proper to designate a special day each year to honor them.

Among the many beautiful words that have been expressed about one’s mother, the following are among the best: Thomas A. Edison said, “My mother was the making of me. She was so true, so sure of me; and I felt that I had someone to live for, someone I must not disappoint.” Abraham Lincoln exclaimed, “All that I am I owe to my mother.” Booker T. Washington was quoted with, “My dear mother had a large fund of good, hard, common sense, which enabled her to meet and master every situation. If I have done anything in life worthy of attention, I feel sure that I inherited the disposition from my mother.”

A few anonymous quotations are: “Most of the beautiful things in life come by two’s and three’s—flowers, pets, and even brothers and sisters, but only one mother is there for you.” “A mother is not a person to lean on, but a person who helps you make leaning unnecessary.” “No one knows like a mother how to say things which are both gentle and meaningful.” “No true man ever outgrows genuine love for his mother.”

Of course, God always says it best: His emphasis is on the honor, or dishonor, that we give to both father and mother. “My son, hear the instruction of your father, and do not forsake the law of your mother.” (Prov. 1:8) “A wise son makes a glad father, but a foolish son is the grief of his mother.” (Prov. 10:1) “Listen to your father who begot you, and do not despise your mother when she is old… Let your father and your mother be glad, and let her who bore you rejoice.” (Prov. 23:22,25) “A child left to himself brings shame to his mother.” (Prov. 29:15)

Solomon described the virtuous mother in Proverbs 31:25–29: “Strength and honor are her clothing; she shall rejoice in time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and on her tongue is the law of kindness. She watches over the ways of her household, and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: ‘Many daughters have done well, but you excel them all.’”
